Rave fashion has changed a lot over the decades, but many underlying principles have remained the same. Outfits are meant to be an outlet for self-expression, and raves are a great way to try new things for yourself in a space where you don’t have to be worried about feeling judged. That said, this guide isn’t about picking your outfit pieces, it’s about helping you find items that match your energy, keep you comfortable, and prevent regrets.

Having a comfortable outfit has as much to do with how you feel about yourself in it, and how it feels on you. When you feel good, you can take in the full experience of the event without having to be locked in your head. Many festival outfits are loaded and feature bright colors, reflective or shimmering elements, or even have LED lights on them! But that doesn’t mean that’s what you must wear. 

Real ravers value PLUR, and that 100% goes toward outfits too. When I went to my first rave, I was very reserved in my outfit choices as was my friend. pretty quickly, we transitioned to wearing more colorful and rave-centric clothing as we went, and it really felt great to be able to explore our identity through clothing and colors we would normally never wear. Other ravers are just as happy and excited to be there as you are. Wear what you want, whether that means to be modest and reserved or full-on raver gear. Raves are a great place to be who you are and express your individuality in a way you other times would not feel comfortable. 

Raves can be LONG, and you probably spent a lot of money just to be there, you want to be able to explore and dance! Wear something that isn’t too tight that it keeps you from moving freely. Also, make sure what you choose doesn’t rub or chafe (or be prepared with something to prevent it), nothing is worse than dealing with raw skin after just day one. I always recommend trying on your outfit and wearing it around for at least an hour to see if there are any pain points you may want to address. When you have uncomfortable clothes, it can take you away from doing what you really want to do. 

You’re going to be on your feet a lot, so make sure to wear shoes that don’t hurt your feet or cause blisters. I also recommend trying on and wearing your shoes as much/long as possible before a festival to make sure you break them in that they are comfortable. Remember, comfortable shoes don’t have to be ugly! If you’re concerned about your shoes hurting, consider adding insoles. You can also pack some anti-blister ankle wraps to help make sure if they ever do start to rub, you can act fast.  

When you go to a rave, wardrobe malfunctions are common. Straps break, seams rip, and sometimes things slip… But don’t worry! Just make sure to pack some safety pins (great for the festival) and, if you know how to sew, an emergency sewing kit to fix things before you leave. Also, pack an extra outfit or two if you can get the space in your bags just in case you change your mind about an outfit, or something happens to it. Accessories can be your best friend! Necklaces, bracelets, rings, belts, face gems, body glitter, etc. Get creative with your outfits, don’t stop at just your clothes, go all out! Adding a little something can pull a whole look together. Just keep in mind that things get lost, damaged, or broken at events like this all the time. Wear things that you wouldn’t cry about if they go missing, so you have one less thing to worry about when attending. 

Light-up accessories are another great option! LEDs have come a long way and incorporating them into your look can create some truly one-of-a-kind outfits. LED glasses, shoelaces, and wire are some great starting places to find what can make you shine. 

Be yourself when picking out outfits, whatever that may be! As long as you bring good vibes, the most important thing is that YOU love what you’re wearing.
